In the first half of 2024, the price of elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty for non-house\u00adhold cus\u00adtomers in Fin\u00adland (\u20ac0.0939 per kilo\u00adwatt hour [kWh]) was low\u00ader than any\u00adwhere else in the EU.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Oulu region is the largest pro\u00adduc\u00ader of renew\u00adable elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty in Fin\u00adland. In August 2024, 37% of Finland\u2019s wind tur\u00adbines were locat\u00aded in the Oulu region. More\u00adover, wind and solar pow\u00ader pro\u00adduc\u00adtion are increas\u00ading.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h4>Excel\u00adlent con\u00addi\u00adtions for wind and solar pow\u00ader<\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The Oulu region is an excel\u00adlent envi\u00adron\u00adment for gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00ading wind pow\u00ader. The pre\u00advail\u00ading wind direc\u00adtion is from the sea. Fingrid\u2019s 400-kilo\u00advolt sub\u00adsta\u00adtions clos\u00adest to the large indus\u00adtri\u00adal areas are the Isokan\u00adgas sub\u00adsta\u00adtion in the north and Pikkar\u00adala and Pyh\u00e4selk\u00e4 in south\u00adeast\u00adern Oulu. All sub\u00adsta\u00adtions have the poten\u00adtial for 1,000 megawatts of new con\u00adnec\u00adtion capac\u00adi\u00adty. This infra\u00adstruc\u00adture will form part of Finland\u2019s nation\u00adal hydro\u00adgen net\u00adwork, which will com\u00adprise more than 1,000km of onshore hydro\u00adgen pipelines. More\u00adover, inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal pipeline con\u00adnec\u00adtions will be built.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Finland\u2019s nation\u00adal hydro\u00adgen infra\u00adstruc\u00adture is part of an inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal hydro\u00adgen pipeline net\u00adwork in the Baltic Sea region. When ful\u00adly com\u00adplet\u00aded, the planned hydro\u00adgen infra\u00adstruc\u00adture will con\u00adnect hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00aders and con\u00adsumers in the Oulu region \u2013 via Swe\u00adden and the west\u00adern Baltic Sea, the Baltic States and Poland \u2013 to Ger\u00admany and the rest of indus\u00adtri\u00adalised Europe.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<h4>Hydro\u00adgen gas infra\u00adstruc\u00adture from Oulu to Cen\u00adtral Europe<\/h4>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"has-inline-background\">Gas\u00adgrid Fin\u00adland is cur\u00adrent\u00adly study\u00ading two alter\u00adna\u00adtive routes for an under\u00adground hydro\u00adgen gas pipeline through the Oulu region. Both route options run close to Oulu from the east of the city. Both options pro\u00advide func\u00adtion\u00ading hydro\u00adgen gas pipeline con\u00adnec\u00adtions to all key areas of the region\u2019s hydro\u00adgen indus\u00adtry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>In onshore areas, the gas pipeline is about 1.5m under\u00adground. The required right of way for the pipeline is about 5m to 10m wide.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Gas\u00adgrid Fin\u00adland aims to have the hydro\u00adgen mar\u00adket and infra\u00adstruc\u00adture oper\u00ada\u00adtional in Fin\u00adland by the ear\u00adly 2030s. The region\u2019s sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant sources of bio\u00adgenic CO2&nbsp;are large pulp and paper indus\u00adtry units (1+ mega\u00adtonnes [Mt] of CO\u2082 per year) and Oulu Energy\u2019s Bio-pow\u00ader plant (0.6 Mt&nbsp;CO\u2082 per year).<\/p>\n<p>Sto\u00adra Enso, which oper\u00adates in the Nuot\u00adtasaari har\u00adbour area, is com\u00admit\u00adted to reduc\u00ading emis\u00adsions in its own pro\u00adduc\u00adtion and through\u00adout its val\u00adue chain in accor\u00addance with the Sci\u00adence Based Tar\u00adgets initiative\u2019s 1.5\u2011degree devel\u00adop\u00adment path. More\u00adover, as a sig\u00adna\u00adto\u00adry of the Cli\u00admate Pledge, Sto\u00adra Enso is com\u00admit\u00adted to pro\u00adduc\u00ading net-zero car\u00adbon emis\u00adsions by 2040.<\/p>\n\n      <\/div>\n\n      <\/div> <!-- .item -->\n\n    \n      <div class=\"item\" x-data=\"{ isOpen: false }\" :class=\"{ 'is--open': isOpen }\">\n      <h3>\n      <button type=\"button\" :aria-expanded=\"isOpen ? It offers excel\u00adlent trans\u00adport con\u00adnec\u00adtions by both sea and land. It is locat\u00aded near the cen\u00adtre of Oulu, in the Oulu\u00adjo\u00adki estu\u00adary and on the shores of the Both\u00adn\u00adian Bay, and it is part of the Trans-Euro\u00adpean Trans\u00adport Net\u00adwork (TEN\u2011T) core net\u00adwork. Cur\u00adrent\u00adly, the shore is being expand\u00aded by fill.<\/p>\n<p>About 500 ves\u00adsels vis\u00adit the ports each year. The ports han\u00addle around three mil\u00adlion tonnes of car\u00adgo annu\u00adal\u00adly. The City of Oulu owns the com\u00adpa\u00adny Port of Oulu.<\/p>\n<p>The ports of Oritkari and Nuot\u00adtasaari are con\u00adnect\u00aded to the oth\u00ader parts of Fin\u00adland by rail. New tracks will speed up con\u00adnec\u00adtions to Oritkari, improve the effi\u00adcien\u00adcy of freight traf\u00adfic in the area and enhance the func\u00adtion\u00adal\u00adi\u00adty and safe\u00adty of the rail\u00adway yard.<\/p>\n<h4>Syn\u00ader\u00adgies with oth\u00ader indus\u00adtries<\/h4>\n<p>The port area\u2019s loca\u00adtion is ide\u00adal for new projects that would ben\u00ade\u00adfit from syn\u00ader\u00adgies with exist\u00ading indus\u00adtry. The pulp and chem\u00adi\u00adcal indus\u00adtries, among oth\u00aders, have long oper\u00adat\u00aded in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The area con\u00adtains sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant pow\u00ader gen\u00ader\u00ada\u00adtion plants. Two 110-kilo\u00advolt (kV) lines, one of which is owned by Sto\u00adra Enso, will be locat\u00aded in the har\u00adbour area. In Oritkari, options for align\u00ading the hydro\u00adgen pipeline and the 400kV pow\u00ader line have been explored.<\/p>\n<p>Bio\u00adgenic car\u00adbon diox\u00adide sources are locat\u00aded in the area. Since the area\u2019s indus\u00adtry already pro\u00adduces dis\u00adtrict heat for the dis\u00adtrict heat\u00ading net\u00adwork, waste heat could be used for the net\u00adwork. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, there is a water sup\u00adply net\u00adwork for indus\u00adtri\u00adal needs.
