The City\u2019s aim is to active\u00adly pro\u00admote green tran\u00adsi\u00adtion invest\u00adments in its area. Advanc\u00ading the plan\u00adning of three new hydro\u00adgen plants will sup\u00adport the growth of hydro\u00adgen econ\u00ado\u00admy and the devel\u00adop\u00adment of Oulu\u2019s local hydro\u00adgen infra\u00adstruc\u00adture.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plan\u00adning reser\u00adva\u00adtions for the Pyyryv\u00e4i\u00adnen site will be dis\u00adcussed by the City of Oulu Urban Envi\u00adron\u00adment Com\u00admit\u00adtee at its meet\u00ading on 8 April 2025. The site is a vir\u00adtu\u00adal\u00adly unde\u00advel\u00adoped, large-scale indus\u00adtri\u00adal area of up to 800 hectares less than 10 kilo\u00adme\u00adtres from the cen\u00adtre of Oulu, next to the V\u00e4likyl\u00e4 indus\u00adtri\u00adal dis\u00adtrict. The area required by busi\u00adness\u00ades ranges from 15 hectares to 41 hectares.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plants would pro\u00adduce hydro\u00adgen and syn\u00adthet\u00adic fuels processed from hydro\u00adgen, both for local use and for export via a new hydro\u00adgen pipeline all the way to cen\u00adtral Europe and the Port of Oulu. Hydro\u00adgen would be pro\u00adduced from water by elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis in an emis\u00adsion-free way, using wind pow\u00ader and oth\u00ader poten\u00adtial renew\u00adable elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty. Hydro\u00adgen refin\u00adery prod\u00aducts, such as sus\u00adtain\u00adable avi\u00ada\u00adtion fuel (E\u2011SAF), are pro\u00adduced from hydro\u00adgen and bio\u00adgenic car\u00adbon diox\u00adide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ear\u00adli\u00ader this win\u00adter, the City of Oulu and Ver\u00adso Ener\u00adgy of France signed an agree\u00adment aim\u00ading at build\u00ading a hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adcess\u00ading plant in Oritkari, Oulu, near the port. Fur\u00adther\u00admore, local ener\u00adgy com\u00adpa\u00adny Oulun Ener\u00adgia is plan\u00adning to build a hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion plant in Laani\u00adla, Oulu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inter\u00adna\u00adtion\u00adal com\u00adpa\u00adnies involved<br>The first phase of Energiequelle Oy\u2018s project would involve the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of a hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion plant of up to five megawatts (MW) and a hydro\u00adgen refu\u00adelling sta\u00adtion for bus\u00ades and oth\u00ader heavy vehi\u00adcles. In the next phase, the capac\u00adi\u00adty of the hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion plant would be increased by 10\u201350 MW and hydro\u00adgen exports would also be launched. In the third phase, pro\u00adduc\u00adtion would be fur\u00adther increased by an addi\u00adtion\u00adal 100\u2013500 MW. The final size of the sec\u00adond and third phas\u00ades will depend on the mar\u00adket sit\u00adu\u00ada\u00adtion and the infra\u00adstruc\u00adture avail\u00adable at Pyyryv\u00e4i\u00adnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energiequelle esti\u00admates that the employ\u00adment impact after com\u00adple\u00adtion of the first phase would be around 10 jobs in plant oper\u00ada\u00adtion, main\u00adte\u00adnance, admin\u00adis\u00adtra\u00adtion and sup\u00adport activ\u00adi\u00adties. The employ\u00adment impact of the sec\u00adond and third phas\u00ades would be sig\u00adnif\u00adi\u00adcant\u00adly high\u00ader. The phas\u00ades would be com\u00adplet\u00aded between 2028 and 2033. Energiequelle Oy\u2019s par\u00adent com\u00adpa\u00adny is Energiequelle GmbH of Ger\u00admany.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The size of the hydro\u00adgen plant planned by ABO Ener\u00adgy Fin\u00adland Oy would be up to 600 MW. Imple\u00admen\u00adta\u00adtion would take place in 2\u20133 phas\u00ades if the project pro\u00adceeds. In addi\u00adtion to hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion, the com\u00adpa\u00adny is also explor\u00ading the pos\u00adsi\u00adbil\u00adi\u00adty of pro\u00adduc\u00ading methanol from hydro\u00adgen as well as sus\u00adtain\u00adable avi\u00ada\u00adtion fuel, E\u2011SAF, the real\u00adi\u00adsa\u00adtion of which depends on the avail\u00adabil\u00adi\u00adty of bio\u00adgenic car\u00adbon diox\u00adide. ABO Ener\u00adgy would offer the waste heat gen\u00ader\u00adat\u00aded for use as dis\u00adtrict heat\u00ading in the Oulu region. The first phase could be deployed around 2034\u20132036. If realised, the hydro\u00adgen plant could employ at least 50\u201380 peo\u00adple, depend\u00ading on the final size of the hydro\u00adgen plant. ABO Ener\u00adgy Fin\u00adland Oy\u2019s par\u00adent com\u00adpa\u00adny is the Ger\u00adman ABO Ener\u00adgy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fur\u00adther\u00admore, a third com\u00adpa\u00adny is plan\u00adning to build about 400 MW of elec\u00adtrol\u00ady\u00adsis capac\u00adi\u00adty for hydro\u00adgen pro\u00adduc\u00adtion in the region. The first phase of the plant is ten\u00adta\u00adtive\u00adly sched\u00aduled to be deployed in 2030. The group oper\u00adates in 16 coun\u00adtries and employs over 1,400 peo\u00adple. In 2024, the group had a turnover of \u20ac446 mil\u00adlion and an oper\u00adat\u00ading result of \u20ac25.6 mil\u00adlion. They have hydro\u00adgen project devel\u00adop\u00adment activ\u00adi\u00adties in sev\u00aden coun\u00adtries in Europe, Latin Amer\u00adi\u00adca, and Africa. The H\u00fcn\u00adfeld-Michel\u00adsrom\u00adbach hydro\u00adgen refu\u00adelling sta\u00adtion in Ger\u00admany is the Group\u2019s first hydro\u00adgen project that has pro\u00adgressed to con\u00adstruc\u00adtion. The sta\u00adtion will be ready for deploy\u00adment in spring 2025. The company\u2019s name derives from the ini\u00adtials of founders Jochen Ahn and Matthias Bock\u00adholt. The founders and their fam\u00adi\u00adlies are still the main share\u00adhold\u00aders of the com\u00adpa\u00adny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:46px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\">\n\n\n\n<p>About Oulu GH2 \u2014 Togeth\u00ader towards green hydro\u00adgen busi\u00adness in Oulu and North\u00adern Fin\u00adland project aims to cre\u00adate a cen\u00adtral\u00adized hydro\u00adgen econ\u00ado\u00admy inno\u00adva\u00adtion ecosys\u00adtem oper\u00adat\u00ading mod\u00adel for the region of Oulu and North Ostro\u00adboth\u00adnia. As part of the project, the hydro\u00adgen val\u00adley of the Both\u00adn\u00adian Bay will be built by shar\u00ading infor\u00adma\u00adtion and bring\u00ading actors togeth\u00ader, shar\u00ading news and best case stud\u00adies, and effec\u00adtive\u00adly com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adcat\u00ading them to dif\u00adfer\u00adent parts of the net\u00adwork by Busi\u00adnes\u00adsOulu. Oulu GH2 is fund\u00aded by the Coun\u00adcil of Oulu Region, which finances the project as part of the EU pro\u00adgramme: A Reju\u00adve\u00adnat\u00ading and Skilled Fin\u00adland 2021\u20132027, the EU\u2019s region\u00adal and struc\u00adtur\u00adal pol\u00adi\u00adcy pro\u00adgramme.
