Plans Posi\u00adtion Oulu as the Baltic Sea Region\u2019s Largest Syn\u00adthet\u00adic Fuel Pro\u00adduc\u00adtion Hub<\/strong>

<\/strong>The City of Oulu\u2019s Com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adty Board will dis\u00adcuss grant\u00adi\u00adng a plan\u00adning reser\u00adva\u00adtion for a new hydro\u00adgen plant at Oulu Port in Vihre\u00e4saari dur\u00ading its meet\u00ading on Novem\u00adber 25, 2025. The Ger\u00adman com\u00adpa\u00adny Hy2Gen intends to build a facil\u00adi\u00adty for pro\u00adduc\u00ading hydro\u00adgen and syn\u00adthet\u00adic fuels, pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly for mar\u00aditime trans\u00adport.

The planned 200-megawatt e\u2011methanol plant would make Oulu the largest syn\u00adthet\u00adic fuel pro\u00adduc\u00adtion cen\u00adter in the Baltic Sea region, based on announced plans for fuel pro\u00adduc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties. Syn\u00adthet\u00adic fuels are ful\u00adly com\u00adpat\u00adi\u00adble with those cur\u00adrent\u00adly used in cars and ships, but they are pro\u00adduced using renew\u00adable elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty, hydro\u00adgen derived from water, and car\u00adbon diox\u00adide cap\u00adtured from indus\u00adtri\u00adal emis\u00adsions.

Hy2Gen\u2019s prod\u00aduct port\u00adfo\u00adlio includes renew\u00adable hydro\u00adgen, ammo\u00adnia, methanol, and PtX fuels such as sus\u00adtain\u00adable avi\u00ada\u00adtion fuel (SAF). The company\u2019s first projects are already under\u00adway in France, Nor\u00adway, Cana\u00adda, and Ger\u00admany. Hy2Gen\u2019s renew\u00adable hydro\u00adgen and e\u2011methane plant in Welt, Ger\u00admany, has been oper\u00ada\u00adtional for sev\u00ader\u00adal years.

Oulu Grows as a Green Indus\u00adtry Hub
<\/strong>\u201cOulu now has more syn\u00adthet\u00adic fuel pro\u00adduc\u00adtion projects planned than any oth\u00ader loca\u00adtion in the Baltic Sea region,\u201d says Marko Kilpel\u00e4i\u00adnen, Direc\u00adtor of Urban Envi\u00adron\u00adment for the City of Oulu.
Pre\u00advi\u00adous announce\u00adments of planned pro\u00adduc\u00adtion facil\u00adi\u00adties in Oulu have come from French com\u00adpa\u00adny Ver\u00adso Ener\u00adgy, Ger\u00adman com\u00adpa\u00adnies Energiequelle and ABO Ener\u00adgy, and Finnish com\u00adpa\u00adnies P2X Solu\u00adtions and Oulun Ener\u00adgia.

Com\u00adpet\u00adi\u00adtive Advan\u00adtage: Afford\u00adable Elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty<\/strong>
\u201cFinland\u2019s advan\u00adtage in attract\u00ading new plants lies in hav\u00ading some of the low\u00adest elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty prices in Europe, and the Oulu region is the largest pro\u00adduc\u00ader of renew\u00adable elec\u00adtric\u00adi\u00adty in the north\u00adern Baltic,\u201d notes Janne Hietanie\u00admi, Cus\u00adtomer Man\u00adag\u00ader at Busi\u00adnes\u00adsOulu.

This is not yet Hy2Gen\u2019s final invest\u00adment deci\u00adsion. After the City of Oulu grants the plan\u00adning reser\u00adva\u00adtion, the com\u00adpa\u00adny will begin prepar\u00ading more detailed plans. Hy2Gen will announce fur\u00adther details about the project at the North\u00adern Pow\u00ader event in Oulu on Feb\u00adru\u00adary 12, 2026.
