On Tuesday 18th of February, the ICT Oulu team from Business Oulu visited the University of Oulu\u2019s research labs to gain insights into their ongoing projects and research scope. The primary focus of this visit was to explore collaboration opportunities and strengthen Oulu\u2019s ecosystem, particularly in the fields of microelectronics and semiconductors. Our visit was hosted by Aimo Vainio<\/strong>, Account Manager at the University of Oulu, who facilitated our discussions and introductions to key researchers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the visit, we had the opportunity to explore the following labs:

    \n
  • Microelectronics Lab<\/strong>: Hosted by Jari Juuti<\/strong> and Timo Br\u00e4ysy<\/strong>, the Microelectronics Research Unit focuses on developing advanced electronic materials and their applications. Their research encompasses a wide range of projects, including the development of sensors, energy harvesters, and high-frequency passive devices. Notably, they are working on the “SOPRANO” project (2024\u20132027), which aims to advance system-on-package technologies to boost the Nordic electronics industry. Another significant project is “SUSEN” (2023\u20132025), focusing on creating a knowledge and networking platform for sustainable electronics derived from northern bioresources.

  • Centre for Material Analysis Research Infrastructure<\/strong>: Our tour of this center was led by Janne Remes<\/strong>. This center offers comprehensive research services related to micro and nanotechnology, as well as materials science. Equipped with versatile and modern research instruments, including a clean room facility, the center supports high-quality research in microelectronics, metallurgy, geology, and chemistry. They provide services such as material characterization, process development, and quality control, benefiting both academic and industrial partners. Notably, the center has collaborated with hundreds of companies across various industries, including mining, steel, and electronics, contributing to quality control, R&D, and process development.

  • Advanced Intelligence Center (AIC)<\/strong>: Hosted by Tellervo Kivist\u00f6<\/strong>, the AIC Lab provides an environment for innovation, new technologies, idea development and testing, and teaching and
    science.

    This visit was an essential step in aligning our efforts with the FiCCC initiative (Finnish Chips Competence Center), reinforcing the strategic importance of microelectronics and semiconductor development in Oulu and Finland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    We look forward to our next visit, where we plan to explore the RF Lab to further understand advancements in radio frequency technologies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
