The Educational Consortium OSAO has signed an agreement with the Dutch company Holthausen Clean Technologies to deliver Finland’s first hydrogen truck for road use. The vehicle is scheduled for delivery in August–September 2026.
The procurement is part of the joint VISIOK project by OSAO, the University of Oulu and Oulu University of Applied Sciences, which develops learning and research environments in line with the green transition and strengthens the role of vocational education in the introduction of new technology. In connection with the introduction of the hydrogen truck, an extensive testing and research package will be carried out in cooperation with the University of Oulu.
The aim is to produce practical information on the suitability of different propulsion systems for the needs of heavy transport. The testing will compare the energy consumption, functionality and suitability of hydrogen, electric and diesel-powered heavy equipment for various transport tasks. In addition, the vehicle’s key technical characteristics, such as operating range and energy consumption, which directly affect usability and operational efficiency, will be examined.
The hydrogen truck will be integrated into OSAO’s learning environments, where vocational education students and teachers will have the opportunity to work with new technology in practice. The procurement supports the broader goal of building a hydrogen economy competence center in Northern Finland, where vocational education, research and business cooperation are closely linked.
In addition to hydrogen technology, the VISIOK project, co-funded by the European Union, will develop other sustainable logistics solutions and digital learning environments. The project combines research, education and practical experiments, and its goal is to meet the changing skills needs of working life. At the same time, the role of the Oulu region as a pioneer in the green transition and support Finland’s carbon neutrality goals.
The project has been prepared in collaboration with the Oulu Innovation Alliance, and the City of Oulu is also a co-financier. The total budget of the project is over 4 million euros.
