BusinessOulu participated in the opening of the Isosuo Solar Park in Utajärvi last week. Developed by Skarta Energy, the solar park has a capacity of more than 100 MWp, making it the second-largest solar power plant in Finland and a significant example of how former peat production areas can be transformed into sites for clean energy generation.
Built on an area of approximately 150 hectares, the park features more than 173,000 bifacial solar panels and is expected to produce 97 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity annually. This corresponds to the yearly electricity consumption of around 12,000 households. The facility is complemented by a 20 MW battery energy storage system, which enhances the flexibility and resilience of the energy system.
The opening event highlighted Northern Ostrobothnia’s strong position as a destination for renewable energy investments. The Isosuo project demonstrates how bold investments, effective collaboration, and long-term regional development efforts can turn the energy transition into reality.
The visit also offered insights into upcoming investments in the region. Janne Rautio has recently been appointed CEO of Utajärvi Business Park, and Amp Tank is set to begin groundwork for its data center project in Utajärvi in the near future. These developments further strengthen the area’s position as a hub for clean energy, energy-intensive industry, and data center investments.
The Isosuo Solar Park provides a tangible example of how traditional energy production can be transformed into a low-carbon future while creating opportunities for new investments, jobs, and regional growth.
