Languages of the Heart: Cristina’s Journey to Finland

Cristina’s journey is one of transformation, curiosity, and quiet courage. A linguist turned developer, she has embraced the unfamiliar with a spirit of exploration and a deep reverence for language, nature, and community. Her story is a testament to how new beginnings can awaken creativity, forge resilience, and reveal unexpected paths to belonging. Hear from her in her own words about her journey and the reflections it continues to inspire.

From Linguistics to Logic: Embracing the New

Hi! I am Cristina, originally from Italy. Two years ago, I moved to Oulu in search of new beginnings and unexpected adventures. What I found here was not only a new place to live, but a context that allowed me to evolve personally, professionally and creatively.

Before relocating to Finland, I dedicated many years to the field of education, working across a wide range of institutions from schools to universities. I hold a degree in linguistics and foreign languages have long been my vocation and my passion. As the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once wrote:

“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world”.

His thoughts remind me that behind every sentence lies a worldview, a culture, a universe. Languages, to me, are more than a means of communication. They are living systems of thoughts, full of history, emotions, inviting us to see and contemplate reality differently.

After moving to Finland, I decided to explore a new direction as if challenging myself with something unfamiliar. So, when I started studying programming, I discovered another language, one of the logic and construction.

Now, I am a student at OAMK (Oulu University of Applied Sciences), training to become a developer. I build web and mobile applications etc., and I have truly enjoyed learning that.

A Life in Motion: Nature, Music and Reflection

What surprised me most when I first arrived in Oulu was the stillness. Coming from a place where life spills out into the streets, the quiet here was almost surreal.  On the other hand, Oulu’s precious gift has been its nature which is meant to be accompanied with calm.

I love running, and here I can run along picturesque riversides and through peaceful wooded paths, where the serenity of the landscapes offers a space for physical rhythm and mental clarity. These moments in nature have become a quiet ritual: grounding, restorative, and deeply connected to my sense of place. So, even in motion you can reach the stillness.

Outside of my studies, I spend time writing music and immersing myself in literature. Composing allows me to channel inner reflections into sound, while reading continues to shape my worldview offering insight and perspective.

I have also started learning Finnish, a very intricate and beautiful language. I admire its musicality and inventiveness. Though undeniably challenging, it has revealed itself as a gateway to understand the society where I live now, as well as the unique rhythm of Finnish thought and expression.

Building Community, Bridging Cultures

I have also completed an internship at International House Oulu, where I had the opportunity to support people in their integration journey. It was meaningful work that allowed me to draw on my intercultural background and empathy. I found it deeply fulfilling to contribute, even modestly, to community.

The people of Oulu may seem reserved, but it is not coldness, it is a form of quiet care, as they are very kind, reliable, deeply respectful, and at the same time highly value the space and silence.

A Story of Transformation and Quiet Strength

Cristina’s journey to Oulu is more than a change of scenery — it’s a story of reinvention, resilience, and rediscovery. Through languages, code, nature, and music, she continues to build bridges between cultures and communities, finding meaning in both silence and expression. Her experience reminds us that stepping into the unknown can lead to the most profound growth.
