DisÂcovÂerÂing My Path in Oulu: From AcadÂeÂmia to AuroÂra
Three years ago, FahÂmiÂda SarkÂer arrived in Oulu, a city she had only known through acaÂdÂeÂmÂic research and word-of-mouth in globÂal pubÂlic health cirÂcles. Drawn by the uniÂverÂsiÂty of Oulu’s strong repÂuÂtaÂtion in epiÂdemiÂolÂoÂgy and bioÂmedÂical data sciÂence, she packed her bags and took a leap into the unknown – into Finland’s quiÂet, snow-covÂered embrace.
“Before comÂing, I imagÂined FinÂland as a land of forests, lakes, and a sociÂety known for equiÂty and innoÂvaÂtion. I had a vision of Oulu as peaceÂful and comÂmuÂniÂty-oriÂentÂed – a conÂtrast to the busy cities I had known before.
When I finalÂly stepped into Oulu for the first time, that image came to life. BlanÂketÂed in prisÂtine snow, the city radiÂatÂed serenÂiÂty. The peoÂple were reserved but polite, and the atmosÂphere, though quiÂet, felt welÂcomÂing in its own soft-spoÂken way.
Life here is calm – that’s one of Oulu’s most preÂcious gifts. It’s not a city that overÂwhelms; instead, it offers space for reflecÂtion, focus, and conÂnecÂtion.
The slowÂer pace doesn’t mean less opporÂtuÂniÂty – quite the oppoÂsite. In Oulu, I’ve found the perÂfect rhythm for acaÂdÂeÂmÂic research, work-life balÂance, and perÂsonÂal growth.
“Oulu Feels Unique“
What conÂtinÂues to surÂprise me the most is the draÂmatÂic shift between seaÂsons in here. The long, sunÂlit days of sumÂmer feel almost endÂless, while the winÂters offer deep darkÂness that wraps the city in a difÂferÂent kind of beauÂty.
AdaptÂing wasn’t easy at first, but Oulu taught me how to find light in both the litÂerÂal and metaphorÂiÂcal dark – through comÂmuÂniÂty celÂeÂbraÂtions, winÂter sports, and the comÂfort of cozy cafes.
ComÂpared to othÂer cities I’ve lived in before, Oulu feels unique. It strikes a delÂiÂcate balÂance between modÂern ameniÂties and the tranÂquilÂliÂty of nature. This closeÂness to nature has not only enriched my physÂiÂcal well-being but has also proÂvidÂed menÂtal clarÂiÂty and peace.
SumÂmers here are parÂticÂuÂlarÂly magÂiÂcal, berry pickÂing, forÂagÂing mushÂrooms, hikÂing in the woods, or driÂving along quiÂet counÂtry roads. These moments have reconÂnectÂed me with the earth in a way I hadn’t known before. Among my favourite places in Oulu are the serene Hupisaaret islands, HailuÂoÂto and the lessÂer-known KoitelinkosÂki.
They’re places where time seems to slow down. Whether I’m walkÂing alone in reflecÂtion or sharÂing the space with friends, I always leave feelÂing lighter.
My most cherÂished memÂoÂry? The night I first saw the northÂern lights dancÂing across the sky. It was othÂerÂworldÂly. That, and the surÂreÂal expeÂriÂence of the midÂnight sun—where sumÂmer nights stretch into goldÂen endÂlessÂness, fillÂing me with a sense of wonÂder and posÂsiÂbilÂiÂty.

NavÂiÂgatÂing Oulu is easy, thanks to its effiÂcient pubÂlic transÂport and well-planned infraÂstrucÂture. The city is just the right size – big enough to find everyÂthing you need, but small enough to feel conÂnectÂed.
Cycling is popÂuÂlar here, even in winÂter, and travÂelÂing across FinÂland is a breeze with the train and bus netÂworks.
LanÂguage has been one of the more chalÂlengÂing aspects of my jourÂney.
Finnish, with its unique strucÂture and unfaÂmilÂiar sounds, can be intimÂiÂdatÂing. But the city offers great lanÂguage supÂport, and most peoÂple are kind and patient when you try to speak – even a litÂtle.
WorkÂing in acadÂeÂmia allows me to funcÂtion mostÂly in EngÂlish, but I’ve made it a point to learn Finnish to betÂter engage with the comÂmuÂniÂty and broadÂen future opporÂtuÂniÂties.
“Calm Rhythms“
Oulu’s comÂmuÂniÂty is one of underÂstatÂed warmth. PeoÂple valÂue priÂvaÂcy and perÂsonÂal space, but there’s also a quiÂet solÂiÂdarÂiÂty that makes you feel seen, even if no words are spoÂken.
WithÂin the uniÂverÂsiÂty, the acaÂdÂeÂmÂic enviÂronÂment is highÂly colÂlabÂoÂraÂtive. I’ve been forÂtuÂnate to work alongÂside researchers who inspire me and chalÂlenge me to grow.
One of the most transÂforÂmaÂtive parts of my expeÂriÂence here has been the opporÂtuÂniÂties I’ve received opporÂtuÂniÂties that I likeÂly wouldn’t have found elseÂwhere.
My work in life-course epiÂdemiÂolÂoÂgy has flourÂished thanks to the university’s resources and research netÂworks.
As part of the interÂnaÂtionÂal house Oulu ambasÂsador proÂgram, I’ve also shared my stoÂry, built conÂnecÂtions with othÂers from diverse backÂgrounds, and disÂcovÂered extracurÂricÂuÂlar paths that have deeply enriched my perÂsonÂal and proÂfesÂsionÂal life.

MainÂtainÂing a work-life balÂance here isn’t just encourÂaged – it’s embedÂded in the culÂture. My daiÂly rouÂtine includes research, colÂlabÂoÂraÂtion, and moments of pause to enjoy Oulu’s calm rhythms.
Whether that’s a walk through the forÂest or time spent jourÂnalÂing at a riverÂside café, these small pracÂtices ground me.
If you’re conÂsidÂerÂing movÂing to Oulu, I’d say: come with an open heart. Embrace the natÂurÂal world, try your hand at Finnish, even if imperÂfectÂly, and give yourÂself perÂmisÂsion to slow down.
Oulu isn’t a place that shouts—it’s a city that quiÂetÂly supÂports you to grow. And I’m grateÂful every day that I lisÂtened to my heart’s deciÂsion to be here.“
