The NEXTG Center of Excellence (CoE) in Oulu is a pioneering initiative dedicated to advancing next-generation technologies in connectivity, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity. The center aims to create a strong innovation hub by providing test environments, product development support, and strategic partnerships to help businesses and researchers develop cutting-edge solutions.

Technology Focus Areas

The NEXTG CoE is centered around three key technological domains critical for the future digital landscape:

• Connectivity & Hybrid Networks – Advancing next-generation communication technologies to ensure seamless and secure connectivity.
• Edge Computing AI & Embedded Artificial Intelligence – Enhancing real-time processing and decision-making capabilities for smart applications.
• Cybersecurity & Cryptography – Developing secure encryption and defense mechanisms to protect critical infrastructure and data.

Main Services of the Center

The NEXTG CoE provides a range of services to support companies, researchers, and public-sector initiatives, including:

• Concepted in service Test Environments – Designing and developing testing platforms to accelerate product development in the ICT sector. These environments will also help in financing projects and facilitate connections with DIANA (Defense Innovation Accelerator for the North Atlantic) and OuluZone frequencies to enable secure communication technologies.
• Product Development Support – Offering assistance in R&D, personnel support, subcontracting, and photovoltaic (PV) energy solutions for sustainable product innovation.
• Defense Sector Collaboration – Hosting a pilot reference service for the Finnish Defense Forces at the center, with details to be finalized in an upcoming Business Finland workshop.
• International Business Links (KV Links) – Strengthening cross-border business collaborations, particularly with Nordic countries, to expand market opportunities and enhance global competitiveness.
• Financing Models for SMEs – Identifying and facilitating funding options to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in scaling their technological innovations.

Next Steps & Future Development

To ensure long-term success, the NEXTG CoE is actively working on:

• Securing Funding – Seeking EU funding and other financial support for the development and maintenance of the center’s operations.
• Exploring Key Partnerships – Evaluating potential collaborations with PIA, Business Finland (BF), VTT DDE, and other innovation-driven organizations to maximize impact.
• Political Influence & Growth Initiatives – Engaging with policymakers and industry leaders to promote the Northern Growth Package, ensuring sustained development and investment in next-generation technology.

By fostering collaboration between industry, research institutions, and the public sector, the NEXTG Center of Excellence aims to make Oulu a global leader in emerging connectivity, AI, and cybersecurity technologies, supporting businesses and organizations in their journey towards a more secure, intelligent, and interconnected future.
