Lockheed Martin, Nokia, and Verizon Announce Revolutionary Military-Grade 5G Integration on March 2, 2025
BETHESDA, Md. – In a major announcement made on March 2, 2025, Lockheed Martin, Nokia, and Verizon revealed the successful integration of Nokia’s military-grade 5G technology into Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL® Hybrid Base Station (HBS). This groundbreaking cooperation, also unveiled on March 2, marks a pivotal step forward in merging commercial 5G capabilities with secure military communications.
Lockheed Martin’s advanced 5G.MIL system now incorporates Nokia’s industry-leading 5G solutions to enhance connectivity for defense operations. By integrating commercial 5G with traditional tactical communications, the new system delivers fast, secure, and efficient data routing across the battlespace—ensuring that critical mission information is available in real time.
John Clark, Senior Vice President of Lockheed Martin Technology & Strategic Innovation, emphasized the impact of the new system:
“5G.MIL integrations like this strategic relationship with Nokia and Verizon will help ensure data is seamlessly routed throughout the battlespace in ways that make future mission success possible.”
Nokia’s cutting-edge 5G technology, tailored for the unique demands of defense applications, offers robust security, optimized size, weight, and power efficiency. Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia, noted:
“This successful integration highlights the flexibility of Nokia’s cutting-edge, 5G solutions to meet the unique demands of defense, ensuring robust security, optimized size, weight, and power efficiency, while supporting open, interoperable technologies.”
The integration process involved extensive testing across several key facilities, including Verizon’s Boston Innovation Center, Lockheed Martin’s Valley Forge laboratory in Pennsylvania, and their Ft. Worth, Texas facility. These collaborative efforts ensured that the technology met rigorous operational standards and achieved full interoperability between commercial and tactical networks.
Looking ahead, the strategic partners plan to extend these innovations to Lockheed Martin’s 5G.MIL Experimental Network site in Orlando, Florida, where Verizon’s network capabilities are already in place. With 5G’s promise of low latency and high bandwidth, military personnel can soon leverage real-time data and enhanced situational awareness, further strengthening both national defense and allied international networks.
This historic announcement on March 2, 2025, not only underscores the potential of 5G in modern military operations but also sets the stage for future advancements in secure, scalable communications solutions for the defense sector.
