Finland continues to lead in 5G innovation, and recent developments show how advanced mobile technology is paving the way for secure and seamless communication across borders — even in critical defense operations.
In a successful trial led by the Finnish Defence Forces, together with Telia and Nokia, a major milestone was reached in March 2025. Using Nokia’s 5G technology within Telia’s commercial network, the team simulated the demanding communication needs of modern defense operations. The solution created a mobile 5G slice that spanned three Nordic countries, managed by an intelligent system that ensured both data security and operational continuity under challenging conditions.
“This trial is a significant milestone in promoting the dual-use capabilities of 5G in defense use and also in expanding the communications capabilities needed in the NATO area,” noted Major General Jarmo Vähätiitto, Chief of Command Systems at the General Staff.
The test proved that today’s 5G networks can deliver uninterrupted, secure access to critical applications for personnel in motion — not only within Finland but also during joint operations with allies. It’s a step forward in preparing for real-world, cross-border defense scenarios.
The foundation for this kind of progress has already been laid in Finland. One key example is the VIRVE 2 network, developed in collaboration between Erillisverkot and Elisa. Based on high-performance 5G technology, it enables efficient and secure cooperation between authorities — meeting the growing demands for capacity, speed, and security.
Next, the Finnish Defence Forces will continue to explore mobile technology in military exercises planned for spring 2025. These efforts are part of a long-term vision: to integrate commercial technology with military field systems into a seamless, interoperable communication environment.
