ICTOulu at SecD-Days 2025: Advancing Digital Defense and Industry Collaboration
ICTOulu had the honor of participating in the SecD-Days event, held in Helsinki on January 29-30, 2025. The event proved to be a significant and successful gathering, reflecting the strong interest and growth of the defense technology sector in Finland. With reports indicating that up to 30 companies were unable to secure participation due to high demand, it is evident that this sector continues to attract attention and investment.
There is No Defence Without the Industry
The core message of the event emphasized the crucial role of industry in national defense. The rapid advancement of digitalization is driving unprecedented changes in this sector. High technology developments are now more integral than ever, particularly in light of current geopolitical situations, such as the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Finnish Defence Forces’ Chief of Defense Economy, Jari Mikkonen, outlined how Finland is building a new digital defense capability. This involves the integration of advanced sensors, artificial intelligence, and autonomous systems across land, sea, and air operations. These advancements present vast opportunities for companies operating in the defense and high-tech industries.
Procurement and Collaboration Opportunities
The Finnish Defence Forces Logistics Command plays a pivotal role in defense-related acquisitions, managing all procurements exceeding €60,000. The organization is open to collaboration with developers, welcoming discussions even at early concept stages. Representatives from the Logistics Command highlighted that even small companies can engage with them to explore potential support for development initiatives. Notably, they are also receptive to ideas from developer companies, and even small businesses with partially developed concepts can reach out for discussions. This presents a unique opportunity for startups and SMEs to enter the defense sector by aligning their innovations with the evolving needs of the military.
New Defence and Dual-Use Technology
A key topic of discussion was dual-use technology, a growing area of interest in defense innovation. Sauli Eloranta, Vice President of VTT’s defense sector, introduced the concept of “New Defence.” This approach integrates civilian frontier technologies with traditional defense solutions to create unprecedented operational capabilities. Efficiency, return on investment (ROI), and competitive advantage remain essential considerations for developing new defense technologies.
Oulu’s Strong Presence
Oulu-based companies and organizations were well represented at the event. Participants included Nokia, Bittium, KNL, TopTester, Younite-AI, Verkotan, Tacktotek, Creoir, Alvidiotech, Sitowise, Senop, VTT, Patria, Conlog, FabPatch, the University of Oulu, and many others. In addition to strengthening existing connections, ICTOulu successfully engaged with key integrator companies, opening possibilities for new collaborations and business opportunities for Oulu-based firms.
Upcoming Opportunities in Oulu
