The University of Oulu has once again demonstrated its academic strength, with seven disciplines earning recognition in the prestigious Times Higher Education World University Rankings by Subject. These rankings evaluate the quality of teaching and research across universities worldwide, highlighting the global impact of academic institutions.
The university’s Computer Science and Information Technology program achieved the highest placement among its disciplines, ranking in the 126–150 range, a significant improvement from last year’s 151–175 range. Engineering followed in the 176–200 range, reflecting steady advancement, while Education Sciences secured a position in the 201–250 range.A noteworthy achievement came from the Business and Economics discipline, which climbed to the 251–300 range, improving from the 301–400 range in 2023. Other disciplines, such as Humanities and Architecture, Physical Sciences, and Medicine and Health Sciences, maintained solid positions in the 301–400 range.
The rankings are determined by 18 key metrics, emphasizing teaching quality, research reputation, and citation impact. Additional factors, such as external funding and international collaboration, are also considered, albeit with a smaller weight. According to Janne Hakkarainen, a communications expert at the University of Oulu, the most significant influence across all disciplines comes from the reputation of teaching and research.
