BusinessOulu is a member of the FiCCC (Finnish Chips Competence Centre) consortium. In collaboration with industrial and research partners, the goal is to pursue a chip competence centre in Finland that will help speed up the digitilisation of industry and other fields. This project is part of the European Network of Competence Centres and co-funded by ChipsJU and Business Finland.
These competence centres will enable access to technical expertise and experimentation in the area of semiconductors, helping companies, SMEs in particular, to approach and improve design capabilities and developing skills. They will also provide services to semiconductor stakeholders, including startups and scaleups.
Processors are the defining element in future digital value chains. Current themes dominating the overall industry include topics such as energy efficiency, edge capabilities and ability to operate with the variety of software ecosystems.
Not least because of the European Union Chips Act, there are huge opportunities for Oulu and all of Finland to be a major player in this field. There is the possibility to identify logical invest-in cases that build on the availability of talent pool and further production as well as on local cluster of stakeholders that utilise and benefit from such an intervention.
Oulu has a variety of dedicated companies developing or deploying either actual chips or software designed to manipulate its behaviour in nominated settings and applications, whilst our know-how in wireless connectivity (including pioneering research into 6G) and AI is actively contributing towards the development of innovative high-tech solutions. Additionally, our universities emphasise the talent production on this field, and the city region has been successful in attracting significant satellite units of a few international players.
