Hot Air Balloon Journey Towards the 2026 European Capital of Culture Year

The Oulu2026 hot air balloon made its maiden flight on Tuesday, June 3, 2025, from Ala-Temmes in Liminka to Muhos. The first manned hot air balloon flight was made in June 1783, so almost exactly 242 years passed between the flights. The hot air balloon kicks off a new chapter in the visibility of the upcoming European Capital of Culture year.

The year 2026 will be a particularly significant year for Oulu, as the city has been chosen as the next European Capital of Culture. This is a truly remarkable thing, and it should not go unnoticed. That is why the Capital of Culture year is being strongly promoted locally, nationally and internationally.

– The Capital of Culture year is currently being heavily promoted outside Oulu, Annu Höttönen, Head of Communications and Marketing at Oulu2026, summarized.

The upcoming European Capital of Culture year will be a celebration of culture across all of northern Finland. In addition to Oulu, the Oulu2026 region consists of 39 wonderful municipalities. Participating municipalities range all the way from Kalajoki to Kuhmo and from Kuusamo to Pielavesi. Each municipality’s own Capital of Culture year program can be found on the Oulu2026 website.

The Capital of Culture’s Messenger in the Sky

The Oulu2026 hot air balloon is a new venture in the marketing of the Capital of Culture year. The hot air balloon, which will move throughout the Oulu region, will make the Capital of Culture visible not only in the city center of Oulu but also in the surrounding municipalities.

All city departments and public utilities are significantly committed to the events, communications, and marketing of the year 2026. The activities are carried out in cooperation with the Oulu Culture Foundation. Securing advertising space on the hot air balloon is also one of these joint initiatives. In addition to the Oulu Cultural Foundation, Business Oulu and the City of Oulu participated in the procurement.

– Marketing that communicates its message clearly, has wide visibility, and creates a positive feeling is, in my opinion, excellent marketing. BusinessOulu is significantly committed to marketing the Capital of Culture year. The procurement of the hot air balloon’s visibility space is an excellent example of a joint initiative, where multiple parties wanted to bring joy to both residents and visitors of the region, said Johanna Kamunen, Place Marketing Manager at BusinessOulu, who participated in the maiden flight.

Indeed, the Oulu2026 hot air balloon, drifting in the sky with its logo, is not merely an advertisement. It is intended as a messenger of joy, spreading happiness across the whole region. The rare sight of a hot air balloon floating in the sky offers viewers a sense of wonder and joy in the midst of busy daily life. Tero Suutari, BusinessOulu’s Visual Communications and Marketing Specialist (AD), who was participated in the maiden flight, summed up the atmosphere quite aptly:

– Have you ever seen a child or an adult who didn’t feel happy watching a hot air balloon?

The Oulu2026 Balloon Will Delight for a Long Time

In the sky, there is little competition for attention, which is precisely why a hot air balloon acts as an effective messenger. Floating on the edge of the clouds, it serves as a reminder that the European Capital of Culture year belongs to all of us – and it’s just around the corner!

The hot air balloon is scheduled to make around 20–30 passenger flights during the summer season, for which public tickets can be purchased from the owner of the balloon, Moments (Kuumalento Ltd). In addition to various flyovers, the goal is for residents of the area to be able to explore the ball when it is on the ground. Höttönen noted that it would certainly be fun for children, in particular, to be able to see the ball on the ground, for example during an event.

– Few people have actually seen a hot air balloon up close. It is really big!

The hot air balloon’s journey will by no means end in 2026. The hot air balloon complex is a significant investment, and according to the CEO of Moments, Olli Muhonen, the balloon will certainly continue to fly well into the 2030s. The contract for the balloon’s advertising space is valid for two years, but for now it seems that the Oulu2026 branding may remain on the balloon even after the Capital of Culture year.

So the next time you look up to the sky and see a blue balloon floating across the horizon, remember: you are in the European Capital of Culture 2026!
