The charm of the past and future in Myl­ly­tul­li

The new Muse­um and Sci­ence Cen­tre is one of the cor­ner­stones of Oulu’s cul­tur­al cli­mate change. The new build­ing ris­ing in Myl­ly­tul­li will house not only the evolv­ing Sci­ence Cen­tre Tietomaa and the North­ern Ostro­both­nia Muse­um but also entire­ly new func­tions. In these new spaces, sur­pris­ing col­lab­o­ra­tions and pre­vi­ous­ly unseen worlds of experiences will flour­ish at their bright­est.

With an atmos­phere rem­i­nis­cent of an Eng­lish cam­pus, the Muse­um and Sci­ence Cen­tre which blends the past and the future is set to be com­plet­ed in 2026, when Oulu cel­e­brates its Euro­pean Cap­i­tal of Cul­ture year. Con­struc­tion work began in the spring of 2024. It is one of the largest cul­tur­al invest­ments in the city’s his­to­ry.

The future expe­ri­ence hub Tiima

The new build­ing com­plex of Oulu’s Muse­um and Sci­ence Cen­tre will be named Tiima. The name refers to an hour­glass, sym­bol­iz­ing a jour­ney and adven­ture through time. Tiima also evokes the idea of a team, which reflects the unique col­lab­o­ra­tion between the two muse­ums and the sci­ence cen­tre. The com­plex will inter­twine his­to­ry, art, and sci­ence in an inspir­ing way.

Mod­ern and adapt­able

A mag­nif­i­cent new build­ing com­plex ris­ing in Myl­ly­tul­li on the old Åström indus­tri­al site will fea­ture, among oth­er things, eight exhi­bi­tion halls, an immer­sive mul­ti­me­dia space, work­shop areas, a restau­rant, and a shop. Thanks to its adapt­abil­i­ty, the mod­ern spaces will offer vis­i­tors expe­ri­ence worlds where the same area feels com­plete­ly new with each exhi­bi­tion change. The exhi­bi­tion area will also be expand­ed to the court­yard. Addi­tion­al­ly, the build­ing will pro­vide work­space for approx­i­mate­ly 40 employ­ees. The upcom­ing exhi­bi­tion and event cen­tre is expect­ed to attract over 200,000 vis­i­tors annu­al­ly.
