Evolving Urban Oulu
Museum and Science Centre
The charm of the past and future in Myllytulli
The new Museum and Science Centre is one of the cornerstones of Oulu’s cultural climate change. The new building rising in Myllytulli will house not only the evolving Science Centre Tietomaa and the Northern Ostrobothnia Museum but also entirely new functions. In these new spaces, surprising collaborations and previously unseen worlds of experiences will flourish at their brightest.
With an atmosphere reminiscent of an English campus, the Museum and Science Centre which blends the past and the future is set to be completed in 2026, when Oulu celebrates its European Capital of Culture year. Construction work began in the spring of 2024. It is one of the largest cultural investments in the city’s history.

The future experience hub Tiima
The new building complex of Oulu’s Museum and Science Centre will be named Tiima. The name refers to an hourglass, symbolizing a journey and adventure through time. Tiima also evokes the idea of a team, which reflects the unique collaboration between the two museums and the science centre. The complex will intertwine history, art, and science in an inspiring way.
Modern and adaptable
A magnificent new building complex rising in Myllytulli on the old Åström industrial site will feature, among other things, eight exhibition halls, an immersive multimedia space, workshop areas, a restaurant, and a shop. Thanks to its adaptability, the modern spaces will offer visitors experience worlds where the same area feels completely new with each exhibition change. The exhibition area will also be expanded to the courtyard. Additionally, the building will provide workspace for approximately 40 employees. The upcoming exhibition and event centre is expected to attract over 200,000 visitors annually.
