Automatic control of heavy electrically operated port machinery (Port Automation)

The transport of goods and materials and the handling volumes of shipping containers through ports are very significant and one of the foundations of Finland’s competitiveness. Central and Northern Ostrobothnia are home to important ports for goods logistics (Oulu, Raahe,…) where large machines are used to unload and load goods.
This project creates Finland’s first open experimental research, development and training environment for container handling, storage, unloading and loading using automatically controlled work machines. The project includes familiarization with the technology and the system, introduction of the necessary work machines and systems, automation experiments in the handling of sea containers using remote control and autonomous control. The basic testing cycles of container handling automation are carried out in Ouluzone. In addition, possible tests are carried out in the ports of the region and various domestic and international events are organized.
The project is co-funded by the European Union.
