MetaCity
The current principles of urban design and planning will be evaluated from the smart city development perspective. Additionally, the models of digital infrastructure planning will be evaluated. MetaCity Oulu project co-operates intensively with three Oulu Innovation Alliance programs of “Digitalisation in the changing urban environment”, with which special trials, Proof-of-Concepts (PoCs), will be conducted. Selected companies ranging from startups to bigger companies will be invited to the trials. This supports the cross-cutting OIA program of company ecosystems. The aim of the PoCs is to develop the ecosystems further and scale them up for international markets.
Existing challenges and how they are solved:
Typically, urban design and planning as well as development of smart cities is conducted in separate processes by various stakeholders. Synchronisation of projects is challenging, because often the responsible organisations cannot be identified clearly. The operational environment is fragmented, which makes it complicated to develop high-quality services in a structured city environment. The development from a city to a smart city – “Transformation process from city to smart city” – should be well controlled so that the targeted services and activities can be realised, covering all the categories of land use.
Existing challenges and how they are solved:
Companies from various fields of business are invited to join the project advisory board and to contribute to the execution of the project.
The project is co-funded by the European Union.
