Hauru’s Smart Recycling & Inno­va­tion on the Beach –sys­tem in the Bätt­re Folk Fes­ti­val

Hau­ru tes­ted their solu­tion for the opti­miza­tion of was­te mana­ge­ment with real-time infor­ma­tion col­lec­ted with sen­sors on was­te bins in the Hai­luo­to Bätt­re Folk Fes­ti­val. A new recycling point was used in the festival’s cam­ping as well as por­table was­te bins. In the trial, calcu­la­tion of the recycling rate was succes­ful, recycling was more efficient and the staff’s workload beca­me ligh­ter.

Inno­va­tion Trial

The goal of the Bätt­re Folk Festival’s was­te col­lec­tor Hauru’s inno­va­tion trial was to boost recycling and inc­rea­se the recycling rate with the help of a was­te mana­ge­ment plan as well as inc­rea­sing the res­pon­si­bi­li­ty of fes­ti­val cam­ping by making was­te col­lec­tion and recycling easier. It is pos­sible to reduce the festival’s car­bon footprint with the­se met­hods: with the help of calcu­la­tion the event orga­nizer can col­lect exact infor­ma­tion about the car­bon footprint caused by was­te mana­ge­ment.

Hau­ru tes­ted their Smart Recycling & Inno­va­tion On The Beach solu­tion that uses sen­sors that col­lect real-time infor­ma­tion from was­te bins and help with the opti­miza­tion of was­te mana­ge­ment with data sent into the applica­tion. A new was­te col­lec­tion point was deve­lo­ped in the cam­ping area and mul­tiple por­table Mini-Hau­ru was­te bins were distri­bu­ted to the atten­dees to reduce lit­te­ring. Feed­back was also col­lec­ted.

Results

Hauru’s smart sen­sors on was­te bins were used for the first time at 5‑minute data trans­mis­sion inter­vals – nor­mal­ly the inter­val is 2–4 hours. The relia­bi­li­ty was 100 %. The staff were also plea­sed and they found the applica­tion use­ful especial­ly out­si­de the fes­ti­val area: the­re was no need for use­less ins­pec­tion visits and time was saved for other tasks.

The recycling point deve­lo­ped for the cam­ping site was also success­ful and the calcu­la­tion of the area’s recycling rate succee­ded well. It will work as a basis for the design of was­te mana­ge­ment for the coming years. The calcu­la­ted recycling rate of the cam­ping area was 16,90 %, speci­fied with the sen­sors 15,60 %. Valuable expe­rience was gai­ned with the use of Mini-Hau­ru was­te bins: in the futu­re they should be pre­pa­red in the cam­ping site to make their use easier.

The atten­dees found the recycling at the event fun. Accor­ding to the encou­ra­ging feed­back, the fes­ti­val atten­dees think that recycling is the part of res­pon­sible cus­to­mers. The best trash is col­lec­ted trash!
