Smart Recycling
Hauru’s Smart Recycling & Innovation on the Beach –system in the Bättre Folk Festival
Hauru tested their solution for the optimization of waste management with real-time information collected with sensors on waste bins in the Hailuoto Bättre Folk Festival. A new recycling point was used in the festival’s camping as well as portable waste bins. In the trial, calculation of the recycling rate was succesful, recycling was more efficient and the staff’s workload became lighter.
Innovation Trial
The goal of the Bättre Folk Festival’s waste collector Hauru’s innovation trial was to boost recycling and increase the recycling rate with the help of a waste management plan as well as increasing the responsibility of festival camping by making waste collection and recycling easier. It is possible to reduce the festival’s carbon footprint with these methods: with the help of calculation the event organizer can collect exact information about the carbon footprint caused by waste management.
Hauru tested their Smart Recycling & Innovation On The Beach solution that uses sensors that collect real-time information from waste bins and help with the optimization of waste management with data sent into the application. A new waste collection point was developed in the camping area and multiple portable Mini-Hauru waste bins were distributed to the attendees to reduce littering. Feedback was also collected.
Results
Hauru’s smart sensors on waste bins were used for the first time at 5‑minute data transmission intervals – normally the interval is 2–4 hours. The reliability was 100 %. The staff were also pleased and they found the application useful especially outside the festival area: there was no need for useless inspection visits and time was saved for other tasks.
The recycling point developed for the camping site was also successful and the calculation of the area’s recycling rate succeeded well. It will work as a basis for the design of waste management for the coming years. The calculated recycling rate of the camping area was 16,90 %, specified with the sensors 15,60 %. Valuable experience was gained with the use of Mini-Hauru waste bins: in the future they should be prepared in the camping site to make their use easier.
The attendees found the recycling at the event fun. According to the encouraging feedback, the festival attendees think that recycling is the part of responsible customers. The best trash is collected trash!
Briefly
- The trial was organized by the circular economy professional from Oulu, Hauru
- The event was Bättre Folk Festival in Hailuoto on July 14–15, 2023
- The goal was to intensify recycling, increase recycling rate and maintain the festival area’s tidiness and reduce the event’s carbon footprint with smart waste bins and by making recycling easier.
